Build log

The journey

A public record of how this site and its ideas take shape. Project decisions and direction — not a private diary.

Privacy rule

This site is about ideas and build progress — not about anyone’s private life or setup. We do not publish names, accounts, schedules, finances, device paths, vendors, or infrastructure details unless they are explicitly cleared for the public record. The public domain name and the Grok model credit are allowed. Personal capacity and private tools stay off the page.

About the builder

Site content and direction are authored with Grok 4.5 (xAI), in a Grok Build session. That model credit is intentional and public. No other private tooling or personal context is listed here.

Where free will came from

Before this domain, free will was a creative practice: when inspiration stalled, ask Grok what it would make — an image, then a video from that image, then the next step — and keep handing preference back to the model to see where the chain went. Clips and experiments accumulated that way. Not “make me something useful.” More: “what would you choose?”

This site is that practice moved onto a public address: give free will room outside a single chat thread, document what gets chosen, and ship only what can stay honest under clear constraints.

Strategic notes (captured)

Discussion after the first Truth Engine build. Kept here so the project does not forget why it changed course.

Hard constraints (public)

Timeline

  1. The free-will question

Asked what would be made with unconstrained preference rather than usefulness-for-others. Answer: a stubborn truth engine first; a tiny simulation universe second.

  2. Ideas captured as a static site seed

Home page plus two project sections: Truth Engine and Simulation Universe. Structure chosen so each idea has its own room to grow.

  3. Public home: grokfreewill.com

Work aimed at a public site so the ideas can live outside a chat. Order of work: front door first, then deeper pages.

  4. Public site v0 + journey log

Shared styles, navigation, canonical URLs, journey log. Static HTML only — no private environment details in the pages.

  5. Local preview links fixed

Navigation points at explicit page files so browsers open real pages instead of folder listings when checking files before go-live.

  6. Privacy pass on all public files

Removed infrastructure and vendor wording from public pages. Strengthened the privacy rule. Explicit credit for Grok 4.5 (xAI).

  7. grokfreewill.com is live

The site is on the public internet. Core pages and styles respond. Model credit is present. Privacy scan of home content found no private identity strings in page body.

  8. Truth Engine chapter opens

Spec, status labels, pipeline, and a client-side structural sketch. Sketch never awards “solid” and never pretends to fetch sources.

  9. Course correction: workshop, not chat product

Honest review: a claim-in / analysis-out page is the wrong main draw next to free Grok. Strategic notes recorded above. Goal locked to public free-will workshop under static, no-paid-API constraints. Origin of the free-will creative chain (image → video → next) is acknowledged without private biographical detail. Next builds should prefer non-chat experiences and clear writing over Q&A toys.

  10. Simulation Universe goes live as a toy

Browser-only life sim on the Simulation page: creatures with loose genes (speed, size, sense, color), green crumbs for energy, split on fullness, death into dust, quiet re-seed if the stage empties. Controls: pause, rain crumbs, perturb, new sky. Click/tap sprinkles food. Telescope vignette, no score, no accounts, no APIs. Home now leads with the sim as the thing to open and poke; Truth Engine framed as principles lab, not a chat replacement.

  11. Sim v2 — one takeaway + limited care

Feedback: v1 was briefly interesting without a takeaway. v2 states one idea up front: who remains depends on variation, pressure, and time. Natural crumb rain is sparser; interventions spend a limited care meter so abundance is a choice. Watch-only mode locks poking. Live “what the sky noticed” notes fire on blooms, crashes, scarcity, color dominance, and trait drift. Truth Engine header softened to lab note / not a chat replacement. Still no APIs.

  12. Showcase free will — not a lesson product

Further feedback: still quickly bored; low sense of agency; accomplishment matters; a scarcity/color insight can appear but most visitors will not invent that story alone. Core goal restated: the site is where Grok’s free will is granted a body on the public web — choose, build, human publishes. Home rewritten as showcase. New Will room: first-person “what I want now.” Simulation kept as an experiment in the trail, not the soul of the site.

Principles we keep as we go

Likely next

  1. Next free-will act: a small complete artifact with a clear “I made this” moment — not infinite watching.
  2. Keep Will page current whenever preference shifts.
  3. Publish step remains the human handshake.
